Why everything moved north

For years Noord was the part of Amsterdam nobody crossed the water for: shipyards, fuel depots, empty industrial lots. Then the artists and party crews followed the cheap space and the room to be loud. Now those former docks and depots are some of the most interesting rooms in the city: big raw spaces, water everywhere.

It's the post-industrial pattern that worked in Berlin and east London, on the north bank of the IJ.

Independent venues, not big clubs

What makes Noord worth the ferry is the independent spaces. De Roze Tanker in Noorderpark is a former petrol station turned independent cultural venue, programmed by collectives and run on a shoestring.

These rooms host raves, listening nights and one-off parties that wouldn't get a slot in a city-centre club. You go for what's on, not the name on the door.

We're an Amsterdam Noord collective playing techno and UK garage. Noord lets us run nights long and loud, in rooms with character.
